No one is really sure where it got it's name but popular belief is that the bundt may have originated from the German Gugelhupf, a ring shaped cake.
The distinctive ring shaped aluminum pan was patented in 1950 by H. David Dalquist, founder of Nordic Ware. It wasn't a big seller until 1966 when a bundt cake won second place in a Pillsbury-sponsored baking contest. People rushed to buy the pans and ever since they have been a best seller.
